Set

Age group
  • Primary (Age 6 to 9)
  • Junior/Intermediate (Age 9 to 12)

Curriculum Goal

Primary: Spatial Sense

• Sort and identify two-dimensional shapes by comparing number of sides, side lengths, angles,
and number of lines of symmetry.

Junior: Spatial Sense

• Compose and decompose various structures, and identify the two-dimensional shapes and
three-dimensional objects that these structures contain.

Context
  • 2-4 students and the teacher will be sitting on the carpet in a circle or on a video conference chat.
  • Student should have some level of geometric and spatial understanding that able to recognize basic shapes and shadings.

Lesson

  • Deal 12 cards face up in a rectangle and each card has four features - shape, color, number, and shading.
  • The object of this game is identifying SETs of 3 cards from the 12 cards displayed.
  • A SET is 3 cards where each feature is either all the same or all different; If 2 cards share a feature and the 3rd does not, it's not a SET.
  • Continue until no cards are left in the deck and the player with the most SETs wins.
    • Players call out SET when they identify a potential SET.
    • The first player to call SET gets control of the board.
    • Other players cannot interact until the SET is confirmed.
    • The player must explain why the cards form a SET.
    • Correct SETs are kept for points; new cards replace them.
  • Continue until no cards are left in the deck and the player with the most SETs wins.

Look Fors

  • How quickly can students recognize the correct SET?
  • Are students capable of correctly categorizing and recognizing the four characteristics? Is there any characteristic that seems more challenging for students to differentiate?
  • What strategies did students use to quickly identify sets? Is there any specific aspect they focus on?
